Speakeasy, a New Musical, Apr 1 - 16, Produced by Standing Room Only Productions (SRO)
Book by Rachel Landon, Direction and Choreography by Liz Tinder
A brand new, World Premier musical review written and developed by Houstonians Rachel Landon and Liz Tinder. Speakeasy is an immersive theatre experience featuring popular 1920's era hits, roaring dance numbers and a glimpse into the end of Prohibition.
Things Missing by Melissa Flower* - May 12 - 28
Straight from the success of her intensely personal show Hypocrite, Melissa’s next devised show Things Missing will look at the silent spaces between personal narrative and factual accounts. Things Missing is influenced by Melissa’s three-year project interviewing women immigrants, refugees and victims of human trafficking.
Silence, The Musical, June 9 - 26 Produced by Standing Room Only Productions (SRO)
Jon and Al Kaplan (Music and Lyrics, Screenplay), Hunter Bell (Book)
A musical parody of The Silence of the Lambs that’s sure to be popular with seasoned fans of the movie and FBI rookies alike. Fueled by a rabid cult following since the songs debuted online in 2002, SILENCE! was expanded into a live stage show and shattered every box-office record at the 2005 FringeNYC Festival. Winner of the NYCFringe’s Best Musical Award.
"Hilarious takedown! Makes those naughty ditties in The Book of Mormon seem like trunk songs dropped from the Sound of Music" -The New York Times
El Nogalar by Tanya Saracho - Jul 28 - Aug 20
El Nogalar (The Pecan Orchard) is inspired by Chekov’s classic The Cherry Orchard. El Nogalar is set on the Texas-Mexico border and follows one family’s struggle with a violent, changing world. El Nogalar was written by Mexican-born, McAllen-raised playwright Tanya Saracho, who has received many accolades in Chicago theater and who also writes and develops projects with HBO. Her latest gig is writing for HBO’s Girls.
The Mother F**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis - Sept 15 - Oct 8
A high-octane verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery. Addiction, pain, and explosive tempers are not obvious ingredients for a side-splitting comedy. Yet Stephen Guirgis has created a profane, hilarious masterpiece that earned a "hatful" of theatrical accolades in 2011. Guirgis won the Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for his latest play Between Riverside and Crazy.
That Fun Gospel Christmas Show!* - December 1 - 23
Obsidian Theater is creating a heartwarming Christmas show energized by a joyous gospel choir. Come hear the story and get swept up in the music.
*Melissa Flower’s Erasure and That Fun Gospel Christmas Show! are being developed via Obsidian Theater’s Launchpad Houston incubator program for new works and emerging artists.
